A New Book By Dr Satwant Kaur Rait with Revd Dr Inderjit Singh Bhogal OBE
This is an educational book aimed at Sikhs and non-Sikhs written in a plain and easy to understand language. This is one of the few books which have given a comprehensive coverage to the broader concepts of the Sikh religion, the religion based on truthful living, human dignity and equality. The book covers the background of Sikhism, the Holy Scripture of the Sikhs, the concept of God in Sikhism, the origin of the Universe, environment and ecology in Sikhism, equality and Sikhism, family life in Sikhism, Sikh ceremonies and festivals, Sikh behaviour and Sikh way of life. Finally there is a chapter on interfaith dialogue based on Christianity and Sikhism which can serve as a model for interfaith dialogue.
The basis of the book is the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Scriptures of the Sikhs. Information given in the book is supported by the hymns from the Holy Book, which are quoted in Panjabi, the original language of the Granth, and also in English. The complicated vocabulary and concepts are explained in a clear and concise way to make them easily understandable for readers. A separate glossary is provided for unfamiliar words. There is also a separate appendix on the contributions of the Sikh Gurus. The final draft of the book has been read by many who found it accessible, informative, concise and comprehensive.
It is available from the Yorkshire and Humber Faiths Forum or Dr. S.K.Rait rait1936@hotmail.com £9.50 + £1.50pp.

Equality Act 2010 |
|
 |
| |
The Equality Bill was finally agreed by both Houses of Parliament on 6 April, receiving Royal Assent by the 9 April, becoming the Equality Act 2010.
The implementation of the provisions in the act are planned as follows:
Planned from October 2010: the provisions that restate existing law, including the ban on discrimination because of disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation in the provision of services/exercise of public functions, and the ban on discrimination in employment because of any of those protected characteristics or of age or marriage/civil partnership.
Planned from April 2011: a new duty on certain public bodies to take account of socio-economic disadvantage when taking strategic decisions, and a duty on the public sector more generally to take account of the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination
Planned from 2012: a new ban on age discrimination in the provision of services/exercise of public functions.
The Government Equalities Office announced in January that further consultation is planned (in autumn 2010) on whether any 'exceptions' to the ban should be created for health and social care.

£1million fund to help faith groups have their voices heard |
|
 |
| |
Communities Secretary John Denham has unveiled a £1m fund to help faith groups get their voices heard by Government and public bodies and help play their part delivering public services.
John Denham praised faith groups for their hard work and commitment to their local communities and called on local authorities to ignore the myths about faith communities and create a level playing field for faith groups providing publicly funded services.
He also announced a £50,000 prize to reward faith groups for innovative projects in their local communities.
National faith based organisations are invited to bid for a share of £1m funding that help them develop a bigger voice and strengthen their capacity to challenge and engage Government.
The money is focused on making sure these organisations have the tools they need to do the job and could be used for activities including training in fundraising.
